What: Lhakar – Who is Gedhun Choekyi Nyima?
When: April 8, 2015, Wednesday, 7pm
In 1995, at age 6, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, Tibet’s second most important spiritual leader. Shortly thereafter, the young child and his family were detained by the Chinese authorities. (Historically, the Panchen Lama has played a pivotal role in identifying the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, and vice versa.)
Shortly after Gedhun Choekyi Nyima’s detention, the Chinese government installed another young boy, Gyaltsen Norbu, in his place. The Chinese government continues to meddle ruthlessly in Tibetan Buddhist affairs in an attempt to exert political and social control over Tibetans through the religious institutions at the center of Tibetan life. To date, China has denied all requests from the international community to see Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the real Panchen Lama; his whereabouts remain unknown. Tibetans and supporters worldwide call for the immediate release of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and for his return to his rightful seat in Tashilhunpo Monastery.

Venerable Professor Samdhong Rinpoche was born as Lobsang Tenzin in 1939, in the Tibetan province of Kham. At age five, he was recognized and enthroned as the reincarnation of the fourth Samdhong Rinpoche. He began his monastic studies at age 12 at the University of Drepung in Tibet and eventually obtained a Doctorate in Buddhist sciences at Gyuto Tantric Monastery, Dalhousie, India in 1970. In 1959, Rinpoche fled to India to escape the repressive Chinese government in Tibet. There, he was commissioned by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to serve as a teacher to monks in exile. He was appointed director of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi in 1988 and remained there until 2001. On July 29, 2001, Rinpoche was named as a Prime Minister of the Tibetan Exile Government, the first political leader to be directly elected by the people in exile.
He is an eminent and distinguished scholar, teacher, philosopher, and a life-long campaigner for Gandhian principles, especially of non-violence and peaceful resistance.
He is regarded as one of the leading Tibetan scholars of Buddhism and is also an authority on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. He is fluent in Hindi and English, Tibetan being his mother tongue.
